U.S. and Iran Move Closer to Possible Deal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

A diplomatic deal is being created between the Iran and United States governments. This would be beneficial for both countries and would certainly improve the situation and ultimately the chance of war in the region. There have been reports about the proposed deal having been agreed upon in principle by both the U.S. and Iran.

Reportedly, this proposed agreement would reopen shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which is one major shipping route for oil in the world. Also, though discussions are ongoing about implementation details, high-ranking U.S. government officials have asserted that the Iranian government has in principle also agreed to remove their highly enriched uranium.

There is not yet a formal agreement signed, and therefore, the agreement will require the formal approval of the President of the United States Donald Trump and the Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei.

Proposed Agreement Requirements

U.S. officials state that the potential framework will have several key steps which will seek to resolve issues and reduce tension between the U.S. and Iran. These issues include:

Reopening shipping through the Strait of Hormuz

Extending cease-fire previously agreed to at the beginning of January

Commencing talks concerning the Iranian nuclear program within 30 to 60 days

Possible reduction of U.S. pressure measures; including

Though some versions of the agreement have been provided by Iranian and American officials, they differ. While U.S. officials claim that Iran will dispose of any enriched uranium as part of the agreement, Iranian officials dispute these claims and say that they will only discuss nuclear issues in future negotiations.

So far, the different accounts of both countries have shown that negotiations between Iran and the United States are still very fragile and could have considerable problems before the final agreement is made.

U.S. Political Reaction

Lawmakers, especially Republicans who have been very opposed to Iran, have made negative comments about the agreement before it has even been agreed to. Republican Senator Roger Wicker has referred to the deal as “a catastrophe” and asked how can we trust Iran to negotiate fairly.

Importance of the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is the major waterway between the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. Over 20% of the world’s oil passes through this water passage, which is vital for the world’s oil supply.

If the strait were reopened through a diplomatic agreement, it would enable:

- Stabilisation of oil prices

- Reduction of supply interruption concerns

- Reduction of tensions across the globe
